Overview

K9 Web Protection is a software filter that is made by BlueCoat. This filter is intended specifically for home use, and is provided for free for that purpose. Generally speaking, it is a very effective filter that protects against pornography, and provides a few extra features as well.

Installation is simple. You are required to register on their website, including giving them your email address. You will then receive a license number via email, along with a link to download the software. After you download the software, you run the installer and enter your license number. You will then need to reboot your computer, and the filter is now installed and active. You can use the administrative console to change any settings – but you could also run the application with the default settings and you would be protected from the most common problems.

Pros

The main benefit to K9 is the cost. This is a very functional product that is truly free. You are not required to see any advertisements or other nagging messages trying to get you to purchase a product. This is because the home use of this filter benefits their commercial product, and that side of their business subsidizes the free filter.

Another big plus is that K9 Web Protection also has a version for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch (http://itunes.apple.com/app/k9-web-protection-browser/id407657840), which is also free. This makes for a very consistent approach to content filtering for all of your Internet devices.

This product has a simple interface, and a very respectable feature set. Many of the features of a commercial content filter are found in this product. If you are looking for a simple solution to protect your family from inappropriate content, this free filter is the way to go.

Cons

K9 operates as a one-setting-fits-all type of product. There is no way to set up different users – so your 4 year old will have the same filter settings and time controls as the parents or any guests in the home.
